If you’ve been in Network Marketing for any length of time, then you’ve heard this excuse before:
“I’m too busy to…” (fill in the blank with your choice of excuse).
Here are a few that will sound all-too-familiar:
“I’m too busy to do what you’re doing.”
“I’m too busy to attend that event.”
“I’m too busy to set up a blog.”
“I’m too busy to meet new people and build relationships.”
“I’m too busy getting ready to get ready to get ready.”
The truth of the matter is, EVERYONE these days is too busy! Being busy is a fact of life in the New Economy.
Yet, I would put money down — lots and lots of money, mind you — that if these same people were followed around with a camera, and how they spend their time was captured on film, the real truth about how “busy” they are would be revealed.
How do I know this?
Because at one point in my entrepreneurial journey, I was “too busy.”
In reality, I, along with plenty of other people, was “too busy” hanging out on Facebook, checking my email accounts twenty times a day, moving one stack of papers from one side of their desk to the other, etc…etc…
All in the name of “being busy.”
You get the picture.
Funny thing is, although I was “too busy” doing all these things, my commission check wasn’t growing. Interesting coincidence, yes?
Being busy is simply an excuse to not do what is necessary to build a long-term and profitable network marketing business. Whether it’s fear, a lack of confidence, or some other obstacle, the bottom line is it is easy to create “tasks” that seem important, and business-like, but ultimately do not convert into sales each month.
Arguably, being busy is one of the top reasons most people never build their businesses big, let alone build them at all.
Yes, they are “too busy.” But they are too busy doing the wrong things.
And perhaps being too busy suits them just fine.
Perhaps deep down inside, they never truly wanted to own their own lives or have financial freedom.
After all, financial freedom doesn’t come easy and because of this fact, it is not for everyone — even if everyone — when asked — always says, “Oh yes, I want financial freedom!” before heading back over to see which friend lost a cow on Farmville.
Listen, I am not knocking social media or bashing people who are content with where they are in life.
There are many, many people who are perfectly fine with being employed, having a week or two of vacation a year, and being told by someone else what they are worth.
I am not one of them.
I was at one time, but no longer.
And I am certainly not too busy to do something about it.
I’d love to hear from you about the best “I’m too busy” excuses you’ve heard over the years. Share them here and pass this along to your friends if you think they would appreciate this post.
Unless, that is, you are too busy.

Ah Mary (or do I call you Mary Lou?)…I think you have covered all the bases here. There is no end to the levels of creativity that is applied when thinking of excuses.
The biggest challenge I’ve always had to overcome when looking at new potential recruits, is to determine if they are going to be “too busy” to build their businesses. How can you tell?
I guess some sort of pre-qualification is required to be able to assess if they understand that to be successful in network marketing, you HAVE to work.
Stay Inspired!

Great post Mary Lou,
I was almost too busy to stop by and read it LOL! You hit on all the top excuses I’ve heard. From time to time though I still hear the old “I’m too busy…I have to wash my hair” or “I can’t tonight…I have to rearrange the sock drawer”.
You have to want it in order to get it and you have to do something about it. It’s call netWORK marketing for a reason.
Hey Mary Lou
I agree with the above post netWORK! It is work and we have to be organized. If one wants it to work, one has to treat it as a job.
Here is a hint I do: I wake up, give myself an our of me time. Then jump in the shower, get dressed (not a t shirt and shorts) but dressed like a casual Friday.
Then I get to my work. I have to split myself in two sometimes, but I think of it as taking a “personal day” and go back to finish the work-pile I need to do.
I loved this blog! Thanks, Donna

Mary Lou,
Oh this is so true, isn’t it! You’ve hit the nail on the head with all the excuses. It takes discipline and dedication to achieve whatever it is you desire in life. There is no free ride. Once people understand that, they have the choice to make their lives what they want or sit back and make excuses.
I thoroughly enjoyed this!
Val
I absolutely agree that this is one of the main reasons people fail. We are all “busy”, we just need to be clear about what is “busyness” and what is “business”! Busyness is that “getting ready to get ready” state (which has a place), but AFTER business (aka. productivity!).
It is only when our actions align with our intentions that we reach our goals. Intention alone will not get us there! Thanks for setting it straight, Mary Lou!
