What I did not anticipate when I made the switch from employee to entrepreneur is what I would miss from the workplace. Turns out, this is fairly common. Running a business from home has many benefits – the cliché of working in your pajamas, for one – but the truth is, for all its challenges, the workplace gives us things we don’t get when we work at home.
After the start-up honeymoon is over, loneliness is something many entrepreneurs I’ve talked to struggle with. They tell me they miss the day to day interactions with colleagues, even those one or two annoying co-workers everyone seems to have at their job. No amount of time spent on Facebook can replace the exchange of big ideas around the water cooler or having a lively discussion about a favorite sports team – face to face – in the company workroom.
Just goes to show yet again how the little things mean so much more to us when we no longer have them.
