The marketplace has lulled us into believing it’s an either/or split — with severe consequences regardless of the path we take.
When I worked as a rafting guide in Alaska, I met a lot of people over the age of 50 who told me I was so smart to be having my adventure young.
“Once you get a job and settle down,” they’d say, “It’s practically impossible to do anything you want anymore.”
All these years later, I still think about those statements and see the inherent flaw in the thought process behind them. No matter where we find ourselves on the journey, we always have choices about the life model we buy into. For too many, though, the all-or-nothing of youth becomes the why bother of getting older.
Unfortunately, once you’ve landed on that island, it’s nearly impossible to come back.
