Seven years ago, in the heat of the Pacific Northwest summer, it dawned on me as I was taking my kids to the neighborhood swimming pool that life was literally flying by…
…And I was financially in the same place I had been my entire career.
Despite having worked as a teacher in the school system for 15 years, I was not getting ahead. In fact, I hardly had anything put away in savings and debt was mounting as I tried to keep things together.
Don’t get me wrong: I loved teaching. It rewarded me in so many ways – just not my bank account! I wondered if there was a way to keep more of what I earned, or better yet, a way to earn far more than my expenses.
For years I had dreamed of starting a business. I even kept a journal filled with business ideas, and I read books about entrepreneurism many times over the years. But like most people, I was comfortable – what I did for a career was easy, and routine. Still…
That hot day in July, as I sat by the pool watching my kids play and splash around, a little voice inside me yelled, “You’re not getting any younger! When are you going to do something with that dream?”
What Changed…
On that summer day seven years ago, I knew deep down in my gut that something needed to change, yet I wasn’t completely clear about exactly what that change was. So I asked the Universe for guidance, to send me some kind of sign.
Have you ever heard the saying that the Universe always answers when you ask it something?
Less than a month later, a friend gave me a gift that would change my life forever, only at the time, I didn’t know to what to extent and how dramatically that change would be.
But that one small gift opened up a world to me I had never experienced.
That world was Network Marketing.
Like most people I had encountered people in Network Marketing (aka MLM). But I had always rejected it, thinking it was a big scam and sleazy. In fact, even though I knew nothing about Network Marketing, I acted and spoke as if I knew it all – something I freely apologize for today.
As I educated myself about the business model and learned more about the company my friend was a part of, I realized I had based my opinion of Network Marketing on preconceived notions which had no foundation whatsoever!
What Happened Next Was…
I started the process of educating myself about Network Marketing. I researched and read every book I could find about the business model. I attended events. I asked a lot of questions.
I hung around “the campfire” and listened and watched the people who were already building a business.
And what I saw shocked me.
Network Marketing was nothing like I thought it was. I discovered it was a personal development program wrapped in a compensation plan!
I discovered I could earn what I was worth based on my own efforts and helping others succeed.
I discovered an owner with a vision and a 100-year mission plan that couldn’t even come close to the average company in America.
I discovered compassion, support, and kindness the likes of which I had never experienced in the corporate world.
What Made the Difference for Me…
In a nutshell, I got lucky…Straight out of the gate, my very first experience with Network Marketing, I hit a home run. All the pieces that needed to be in place were in place – the company, the management team, the field leadership, the products, the timing.
And so, as a brand new business builder with zero Network Marketing experience, I watched my checks grow month after month after month, something I learned as time went on that didn’t happen in most other Network Marketing companies.
I also discovered that I was getting paid to earn an MBA of sorts, as becoming a professional Network Marketer is essentially becoming a professional business person.
What really hit home for me, however, was when I realized that not only was I building a business, but I was also teaching others how to build a business. One of my favorite sayings of all-time is:
“When the Student Is Ready, the Teacher Appears!”
And sure enough. People were coming into the business ready to learn, to be taught, to become teachers of the business themselves.
After all, as Robert Kiyosaki points out in his best-selling book The Business School for People Who Like Helping People, Network Marketing is a real life business school.
And those who learn the skills, take action and apply them, and help others learn this as well, will be the ones to create life-long residual wealth and success. Something the company I recommend has been doing for more than 10 years!
I didn’t get to where I am today because I’m any smarter than you are; I have simply educated myself and applied the principles to my business.
