When I first launched my podcast in January 2014, I was flying blind.

For the most part.

I'd read one ebook about the topic.

Watched a video or two.

Listened to a few podcasts.

Back then there wasn't much available about podcasting, unlike today where it seems as if everyone has a podcast or a course about how to do a podcast.

In 2014, podcasting was still the wild west of online media.

As I stand at the edge of dropping episode no. 400 of my show, I can say without a doubt that I made the right decision to start when I did.

For no other reason than because it was the right decision at the time even though I fumbled around a lot in the beginning and made a lot of mistakes.

Today, I'm proud of my show. I've worked hard to learn how to be a better host, how to craft useful solo episodes, how to use some of the tech involved in producing a show (I use Adobe Audition).

After a couple of years doing everything myself, I hired a producer which has made all the difference.

I'm grateful to the 250+ people who agreed to have a conversation with me about leadership, figuring out this thing called life, the fumbles, the touchdowns, the long practices that sometimes never end. I've made new friends, formed strategic alliances, and learned a ton about professions and industries I wouldn't have learned about any other way.

Creating a show will be one of the highlights of my life.

If you're thinking about launching a podcast yourself, there's plenty of excellent advice out there. Here are three tips from me:

1. Commit to the journey. Success won't be overnight. No one will be Joe Rogan except for Joe Rogan.

2. It's not about the money. Most podcasts cost money and bring no money to you directly. But you may find that because you committed to creating a quality show, money will find you.

3. Be consistent. The biggest mistake I made early on was not sticking to the schedule I told myself I would when I started. Right out of the gate, be sure to stick to the promises you make to yourself.

Podcasting is an incredibly rewarding experience when you go into it for the right reasons.
