Google AuthorshipGoogle Authorship is good for so many reasons, but for the sake of time I will share three. If you are serious about expanding online in any capacity, you will want to learn about Google Authorship and how to incorporate it into your overall online strategy.

Why Is Google Authorship Important?

1. We Live in Google’s World

Bing is currently running a television ad campaign called “Bing It On” that tries to position itself as the better search option if you want the best search results. I have nothing against Bing, but it has a very steep mountain to climb when it comes to capturing the lion’s share of search. Will Bing steal some Google users away as a result of this ad? Probably. But not many. Habits are hard to break, after all!

The fact of the matter is: as of right now, Google rules the online search roost. Fair or not, it’s the way it is. Because serving my customers and building my business are top priorities for me, I am going to go where the traffic is and play the game accordingly. Which is in Google’s world.

Which leads me to number two…

2. Getting Found Is Important If You Want to Make Money

There’s an old saying that goes: Numbers don’t lie. If the majority of searchers are using Google, I want to make darn sure what I’m offering will be found by them where they are. I am in business, after all. Establishing my Google Authorship will only enhance my odds of getting found for the things my business offers.

3. Oh, and Did I Mention that We Live in Google’s World?

Google may not be everything online (Facebook, anyone?), but it is a lot. And it will continue to grow and expand itself into more and more corners as time goes on. Sure, there may come a day when Google is a distant memory on the digital timeline of history. But right now Google runs the show, and with Google Authorship an essential part of that show’s narrative arc, best to use it.

One More Reason Google Authorship Is Good

Google Authorship helps to prevent copyright infringement. If you are a serious blogger, or business owner, or writer, you want what you write to be protected. Services like Copyscape have been around for awhile, and it’s a really cool tool to check your work against piracy. But the deeper we go into this online content jungle, the greater the need will be to protect that which is ours. Frankly, I don’t want my hard work lifted and then attributed to someone else. Google Authorship helps prevent this from happening.

In my next post, I will walk you through the steps for setting up Google Authorship. In the meantime, if you use Google Authorship now, what changes have you noticed since implementing it?
