In a highlight reel world, carried in our pockets 24/7 no less, it’s too easy any more to trick ourselves into believing everyone else is richer, thinner, smarter, happier, better than we are.
Comparing becomes its own sport, knocking out far too many potential players from playing the game before they even have a chance to enter the arena. “Why bother?” becomes too easy a mantra for the fragile hopefuls who haven’t developed the perspective nor inner strength to see beyond the confetti and post-game interviews to what really matters most:
Showing up to play.
Again and again and again.
How many Bethany Hamiltons, Oprah Winfreys, Madeleine Albreights, Stephen Kings and Jay Zs have we lost in the making because it’s too easy anymore to believe the all or nothing world of success portrayed on YouTube or TV? That if we haven’t already won, we have no business trying out for the team?
As we build a life for ourselves, the question we need to always be asking isn’t, how could I possibly ever be as great as X?
