As so many new relationships go these days, the one I formed with Michael Everett was born in social media.

Specifically, Facebook.

If I recall correctly, Michael was one of Facebook’s recommendations in the “people you might know” column that appears to the right of the feed on your profile. After a preliminary read about him on his profile, I sent a friend request.

The next thing I know, I have a message in my Facebook inbox from Michael asking for my address.

Really? Wow! Things sure do move fast in social media! LOL

Seriously, he was asking for my address because he wanted to send me a copy of his book, Recessions End: Stimulus for the Rest of Us. His note to me went something like this:

“Hi Mary Lou, It looks like we share similar views on the economy. I would love for you to have a copy of my book. Micheal.”

Within the week, a package arrived from Florida in my mailbox with the book inside. (On a sidenote, for anyone who is looking for extra tips on how to maximize your social media connections, Michael’s approach is definitely a winner! Sending free books to book lovers on topics they enjoy is a terrific way to make yourself memorable.)

Anyway, I started to read it right away. Uplifting and inspirational, the book reminds readers that our financial lives are truly in our hands — not the hands of the government, or some other external force. With plenty of personal anecdotes and references to the financial markets (in which Michael worked for many years), Michael illuminates ways for anyone who is willing to work to navigate through the changing economy and make the most out of what seems like a dismal situation.

EVERYONE was impacted by the economic events of the last 3+ years and Michael not only acknowledges that, but shares his heartfelt empathy with anyone who is struggling to get their financial lives back in order. I appreciate his candid approach to a topic that can sometimes be presented in a stuffy or boring manner. Michael is down to earth and friendly while sharing specific ways readers can take advantage of the current recession and move forward in a positive way. He is not shy to share his own tales of hitting rock bottom — only to climb his way back up.

Without being preachy or high-minded about today’s economic reality, Michael Everett has written an important book about how to keep the proper perspective on how anyone can build wealth moving forward.

    No kidding on Michael’s approach being a winner!
    While I was reading your post, I reflected on the number of amazing friendships I have purely due to social media. And at the same time I’m equally blown away by the number of people who don’t realize what they’re missing out on, because they have no clue of how to build rapport!
    Imagine the difference if Michael had have sent you a message saying “Here’s my latest book, you can go buy it at….” Yet sadly, “buy my stuff” messages have become more common than genuine rapport building.

Michaele, Funny you should bring up the “BMS” mentality…I just got an email from an industry leader who is trying to tap into the latest launch craze and instead of offering value for value’s sake, he attached a link to one of his affiliate programs! Interesting, huh? Anyway, that kind of thing is going to happen. Some people are always all about themselves and their next sale, no matter what.

    Michael, on the other hand, offered value for value’s sake with no expectation of anything in return. THAT is the kind of service that fosters good will, trust, and loyalty, the currencies of online business! 🙂
