Gaining perspective may take a conscious effort and at first, can seem like a luxury in this task-oriented world. But it is an essential activity for anyone who wants to grow and expand in business and in life. Far too often, we get caught up in our routines for a variety of reasons: routines are easy, familiar, and let’s be honest — we are busy people.
But gaining perspective means moving away from what is familiar, if only for awhile, in order to see what’s really in our lives. As we get older, making meaning becomes more important as we begin to think about the impact we have had on people and places along our journey. Personal growth and greater awareness are often cited as top things people want to achieve; what does it mean for us to grow as conscious human beings so that we leave the world a better place than when we entered it? Not exactly a small undertaking, but for those who are looking to leave a positive mark behind, there are no shortcuts.
Ways of gaining perspective can range from the simple to the more advanced. For example, you can drive home a different way than usual or try a new recipe that challenges what you already know about cooking or combining ingredients. You can also shake things up more dramatically with a trip to a place you’ve never been (it doesn’t have to be to some far away corner of the earth, either — a town in your local area counts!) or to a place you haven’t been to in years, such as your hometown or where your grandparents used to live.
