Why You Absolutely MUST Create Your Personal Brand to Succeed in The New Economy

by Mary Lou Kayser in Strategy3 Comments

Want to know one of the fastest ways to succeed in the New Economy?

Create your personal brand.

That’s right, folks. In this day and age of Web 2.0, it really is all about you. And if you aren’t managing yourself, you will get left behind by those who are.

Personal branding isn’t just for famous people anymore. It’s for everyone: employees and entrepreneurs, moms and dads, kids getting ready to go to college…the list can go on and on, but the truth of the matter is, if you want to succeed, you better work on branding yourself.

Here’s why personal branding is so important.

Emerging research shows that people are far more likely to trust individuals today than they are institutions. Ever hear someone say something bad about the government? Or the public school system? Or corporate America? Maybe some not-so-choice words about these institutions have come out of your mouth at one time or another. The point is, Big Bad Organizations are not so popular these days, especially in the wake of the economic downturn. Lots and lots of people are blaming these behemoths for their economic woes, and in many cases, rightly so! But it will be the people who take charge of their futures by figuring out how to position themselves effectively through things like personal branding who will come out ahead.

Furthermore, because of the power of Web 2.0, we are seeing massive numbers of people creating and joining online communities where thoughts, ideas, random observations, etc. can be shared in 140 characters or less. It’s like the old days when neighbors chatted with each other from across the fence. Now we chat with people from around the globe in gathering places like Facebook and Twitter. And with every post and every tweet we make, we are creating a little bit more of our personal brand.

Indeed, we are truly entering an era of the individual as part of communities, a very different concept when it comes to commerce and doing business. In fact, the New York Times just ran an article a couple of days ago about personal branding. Personal branding has also been the featured topic on the Today Show, MSNBC, and popular nationally syndicated radio programs. Think this is just a silly fad that will go away eventually? Whether you like this trend or not really does not matter. (Well, it does matter, just that if you dismiss personal branding as simply a fad and not do anything about it, you will really feel behind in a couple of years.)

The bottom line is, anyone who is either working for someone else (aka an employee) or anyone who is working as an entrepreneur absolutely 100% MUST get cracking on creating your personal brand. This is why I created this blog. Because I am passionate about helping people create powerful personal brands that will get them tangible results in work and in life. 1. I agree with your overriding point. I have to just have to mention that before you focus on a personal brand or personal image make sure you exceed at what you do. A personal br@nd built on just fluff simply will do more harm than help. Just my 2 cents.

Also great job on putting together your blog.

  2. Hi Scott,
Thanks for the comments. You are absolutely right about being exceptional and exceeding expectations. Personal Branding isn’t something you get in a kit and voila, there you go. It takes time and hard word to create and then promote.

Your blog looks great too! I will bookmark it since we are share similar interests.

  3. Love it Mary Lou! You are great at communicating what appears to be a “complicated” topic, and making it sound very simple in your articles! Incredible! That’s a rare skill!

Thank you so much for your insightful posts. I just want to keep on reading! 🙂 I be back! 🙂

    Aloha,
    Kellie 🙂
